Full Disclosure: Unexpected gifts ---- Life is full of them!

Unexpected gifts ---- Life is full of them!

Ya know, some days we wake up and realize that we take way too much for granted.  We see people every day, nod our heads, smile, wave and continue on with our lives.  But...did we really see people?  Did we pay attention to their response when we smiled or waved?  Probably not.

We have a young family that lives next door and they are struggling - as do many young families.  The father works 2, sometimes 3 jobs, mom is handicapped from a childhood accident and there are two little ones that are a breath of fresh air - most of the time.  But we all have those times when we are pre-occupied and are focused on other things that are, in our minds, more important.

But is there really anything more important than an innocent "hello" and a smile from a child?  Is there?

I'm going to bet and say that the answer is no.   And that's exactly why, at 8:30 this evening, when my doorbell rang and all I could think was, "Who in the world is that!?"  To my surprise it was the two little ones from next door.  Her in a party dress, and little brother in his Spiderman outfit.

In the little girls hands is a plate shaped like a bear's head loaded with cake and ice cream.  It seems as though today was "Spiderman's" 4th birthday!  And I was being honored with cake and ice cream.

Can life get any better?  I'm not sure it could - at least not right now.  I asked, "Did Spiderman have a birthday?"  After many giggles and eye-rolls the answer - "YES!  That's why we brought you cake.  'Cause you didn't get to come to the party."

Thank God for children.  They remind us that there is a level of innocence and naivete that can only be seen in the eyes of a child.

I think I'll finish my cake now...

No Carol, there is nothing more important. It's our life mission and purpose - there is none more important than finding that we take too much for granted and find ways to reach out to those around us. What a very cute story!

Carol, What a beautiful and touching story.  I see people young and old struggling to make ends meet and yet some seem to always manage to make the best of it and be able to look ahead.  I used to bend down with my children to their height, I wanted to see what THEY really were seeing....beautiful post!

What a touching reminder to embrace what is good, wholesome and fun in life...Looking through the eyes of a child can enhance a grown-ups vision. :)

Deborah - It's amazing just what the triggers are that bring harsh realizations.  Thanks for your comment.

Carole - Thanks for your input.  There are many that struggle day to day, but this young couple has faced some very large challenges.  But the children are happy and well adjusted and I would miss them if they weren't there to pester me.  :)

Lola - The eyes of a child are supposed to be unfettered by the responsibilities of adult life.  The innocence is enviable and admirable.

Elizabeth - Thank you!  These two little ones are truly special.  They are of Hispanic heritage and it's quite a sight to see a 5 year old sitting with me on the step trying to teach me some basic Spanish.  When she quits giggling I know she's getting frustrated with me.  :)

Beautiful story. Most adults long for their carefree childhood days when they have stress .

I had to return here Carol - you very simply hit on what I defined on vacation last year, as my life purpose regardless of my vocation - life is full of opportunity around us to reach out to in kindness.

Gita - When we were children we thought the world was awfully tough on us - not being able to do everything we wanted.  But now as adults we long for those days.  Kind of sad, actually.

Deborah - Kindness never goes out of style, nor does it cause pain.  What is does is teaches us patience, understanding, compassion and empathy.  All things that are necessary for success - as a person and in business.

Carol, Wonderful post, there are many times we sit around and observe and make the statement "to be young again".  But if we would really open our eyes we would have the opportunity daily!

Carol, what a wonderful surprise foryou and a a very nicely done post! And yes, children are innocent and good for the heart. How can anyone resist that?

Renee - I am glad I made it through 'being young' without serious injury!  LOL  But now I am older and just 'act like a kid' when the mood strikes me!  Thanks for stopping by!

Bonnie - I can't resist a kid.  Ever.  And those two are really something.  Thanks for stopping!

Hi Carol:  What a cute story.  I would have loved to have (invisibly) been there to see them at your front door.  We all so often take many thing for granted that others would just love to have.  Thanks for sharing.

Carol...you must be a great neighbor for them to have thought to do that!

I have no doubt about that!
